Andrew Edwards - Viola da Gamba (Viol)Bow Maker
Andrew Edwards Viola da Gamba (Viol) bows are handcrafted from a variety of Australian hardwoods, including desert Acacia's and Ironwoods. With 15 years experience as a luthier specialising in traditional flamenco guitars, viols and vihuelas, I'm now making renaissance & baroque bows with slide in frogs.
Australian hardwoods provide an excellent alternative to the traditional bow woods of Pernambuco and Snakewood. Pernambuco is listed as endangered due to exploitation and decreased natural range. Snakewood although not currently listed as endangered, will probably have restricted exportation in the future due to heavy poaching of this coveted wood. My woods are sourced from suppliers that provide the highest quality and most ethically sourced timber available. Individual trees are salvaged as dead/fallen, at the end of their lifecycle or are individually harvested in a manner that leaves the ecological system as undisturbed as possible.
Bows $1200 AUD plus shipping & insurance, import taxes to be paid by customer.

The woods used for my bows are predominately from the Acacia species. Australia has close to 1000 species of Acacia, Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha) is Australia's national flower. Some other woods used include Buloke (Allocasuarina luehmannii), & Cooktown ironwood (Erythrophleum chlorostachys),
